Ashburton Show, Record For Entries And Crowd

• i, t _ we att l ® r > * record attendance and record entries made the nf 'fh?2, an » nUa -Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Show on Saturday one of the most successful to date. persons in summer costumes thronged the grounds, a’idstodcoi^how In<mBSt the sidesflows ’ and inspecting the machinery , , c Gat ®* takin « 8 at £6OO were a record, being £129 more than last year s total.

A feature of th e show in the past has been sheep and horses. Although the sheep showed signs of a hard winter they impressed the judges. With record entries in the horse events, these attracted attention from the large crowd. Inaugurated last year, the mannequin parade was packed with spectators and has now become a highlight of the show. Another highlight was the grand parade, led by the president of the association (Mr S. W. G. Watson), the vice-president (Mr J Irwin), and the Ashburton Pipe Band. The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine), who is member of Parliament for; Selwyn, addressed the gather-1 ing and wished the associa-I tion every success in thefuture. More than 70 implements: and vehicles paraded around | the ring for the spectacular: machinery display. With the large crowd ming-1 ling about the grounds, children quickly became separated from their parents. The number (18) of lost youngsters is believed to be another record. Y.F.C. Shearing Lauriston A won the Young Farmers’ Club’s shearing competition by a quarter of a point trom Hinds. From the events, two teams were selected to take part in the Canterbury and Westland finals later this month. A judge for the Y.F.C. and open shearing (Mr R. Taylor, Temuka) reported that the standard was high, especially in the open class. Mr L. Galloway, sheep and wool instructor with the Department of Agriculture, said that the standard in the board work was higher in the Y.F.C. tnan in the open class. Skirting was especially outstanding and Die contestants appeared to be taking near enough to the right amount and the department's instruction seemed to be bearing fruit. The standard of the board work had Improved over the last three years, said the judge (Mr I Millar) of the Department of Agriculture. The best of the YF.C. teams was very good. The major faults were that the fleeces were not being picked up correctly and placed on the table squarely and locks and second pieces were being mixed.

Champion Sheep The champion sheep of the show was a Romney Marsh ram entered by Mr Raymond Oakley. of Mayfield. This ram was a well-woolled sheep with plenty of length of carcase. Runner-up was the champion Merino ram owned by Mr J. R Todhunter, which had an outstanding carcass. A Border Leicester ewe. with lamb at foot, was third, an English Leicester fourth and a Hampshire Down fifth. JUDGES’ COMMENTS Sheep In spite of a hard winter entries in the Merino class were very well brought out. said Mr J A. P. Cameron (Fairlie), judge of this section. The champion ram entered by Mr J. R. Todhunter had an outstanding carcase. AU sheep were showing signs of a hard winter. Mr A. A. Urquhart's champion ewe was very good and beautifuUy wooded. Sheep were up to the standard of most Canterbury shows. Mr A. B. Duncan (Hawarden), judge of the Dorset Down and Hampshire Down, said that the sheep were very weU brought out and true to type. Mr J. C. Craddock (Flaxton) said he was pleased to see the good entries in the English Leicester class. The quality was good apd the competition keen. Tlie champion ram entered by Mr R. N. Clucas would have held its own at any show. Entries in the Border Leicester ewes were well brought out, said the judge (Mr J. A. Thompson Oamaru). The champion ewe was a mor. outstanding animal.

Dorset Horn and Polled Dorset Horn were well brought out and to a first-class standard. said the judge (Mr W. Rout. Oxford). Polled Dorset Hom, which was a new breed in New Zealand, was of a good standard for this country. Mr J. R. Fraser (Pleasant Point), judge of the Romney Marsh rams, said that this was a very strong class. The open hogget and the second sheep in this class were very good. The champion ram was a good wooUed sheep, with plenty of length of carcase. The reserve champion was probably better woolled. but a fraction short in carcase.

_ Mr T H Ealer (Pleasant Point) judge of the Romney Marsh ewes, said that he would like to have seen more entries. The champion ewe was a good specimen of its breed, being a good moving sheep, with a fine head and excellent beck line. It a’sOjhad an excellent fleece. The reserve champion was a younger i eep with a good quality fleece but did not nave the carriage of the champion ewe The champion ram in the Corr- edale section had an excellent fleece, said the judge of this class (Mr W. R. E Booker. Cnnstchurch). This also applied tn the reserve champion which was a bit strong in the wool. Hoggets were well grown and ewes with lambs at foot were good for the season. Entries were a little disappointing. Entries in the fat sheep and fat lambs section were quite good, said the judge (Mr D K. Coleman Leeston). He expected larger entries from an area noted for fattening. In the long wool classes there were only two pens. The specie'. prize went to Dorset Hom lambs and the two pens which came first and second both entered by Mr W . A. Franks, contained exceptionally good lambs. Cattle Shorthorn in the beef cattle Were of an exceptional standard and definitely up to Metropolitan standard said the judge 'Mr J Mcßride, Winchester). This high standard surprised him. The over-all standard of the Jersey section was good, especially in the female lines said the judge <Mr D J. Martyn. Rangiora) The champion cow was not a newcomer to the show and had very little to spare over the reserve cow The champion cow. entered by Mr J. H Gillett, of Oamaru. also won the class for the type and production all breeds. He also exhibited the reserve champion The yearling heifer classes were well filled and nicely shown Heifers were well brought out but the bulls were not strong in numbers. Mr C. Munnings (Heathcote), said that the numbers in the milking shorthorn classes were very good. The aged cows were excellent and the winner, entered by Mr W J. Small, was an excellent beast, being from an imported bull. The younger classes were good showing the benefits of a fo-ward move bi’ breeders in importing blood The class with three animals the progeny of anv one sire this being the top bull in England was an outstanding team Bulls were not strong in numbers but showed the influence of imported Mood tithough he was pleased with whet he saw he would have liked to have seen more com-

petition. said the judge of the Friesian class (Mr E. L. Adams, Leeston). There was only one exhibitor. The champion cow which was young would make a good cow, he believed. Pigs Standard in the pigs section was very high, said the judge (Mr W Simpson. Southbridge), who was pleased with the pavilion. The Berkshire and Tamworth sections were small in numbers but there were three excellent animals in the latter section. Two aged sows, exhibited by Mr H. Ashton, were very fine specimens. In the Urge white section, the pigs were excellent, particularly the champion sow Which had a fine litter. The first Large White boar, under 14 months, was very promising and the reserve in this class was also of a high standard. Entries in the Landrace section were small but of excellent quality. The champion and SOW! entered by Mr R. L. Skilling were bound to bring further awards and produce good quailtv animals it they followed their type, he said. ~ _ Horse, Mr T. C. Grigg (Hororata) K raised the jumping course as emg well built and attractive. Miss M. Ross on Caesar was very consistent and showed she was reaching her best form. The standard of the F.E.I. table A" open jumping was up to metropolitan standard The hit-and-hurry competition was close with only 2-ssec separating the three top competitors who tied with the same number of points. The ponies’ section did not seem to get going, he said. The champion jumpper, Youillia (Mr B. Smith and Miss D. Cunningham) was of a very high standard and more would be seen of this horse. The best riders were Miss R. Ross (women) and Mr M. Ritchie.

Entries in the trotting horses class were disappointing, said the judge (Mr R. Paterson. Mosgiel). Quality was good and a yearling filly entered by F. G. and G. W. F. Prouting was very good. A two-year-old trotter or pacer. “Lady Christine” entered by Mrs Y. I. J. Milne, could be a useful sort.

Entries in the harness and saddle cobs were very disappointing but the standard was exceptionally high, said the judge (Mr W. E. Fox, Dunedin). The standard was up to metropolitan standard and as high as at previous Asnburton shows at which he had judged. Entries, which were exceptionally good, were very well turned out. said Mr G. Coe of Leeston, judge of the saddle horses. These were a great credit to their owners. The champion hack. Miss J. Lemon’s Pimms. deserved his win although Mr and Mrs A. L. Dunn’s Holyport was not far behind. CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS Sbeep Merino.—Ram, J. R. Todhunter. reserve. A. A. Urquhart. Ewe: A. A. Urquhart, reserve, J. G. Hood. Corriedale. Ram, D. S.
