Old Collegians All Out For Dismal 49

The lively accuracy of B. H. Hopkins in conditions which helped him move the ball off the pitch exposed sorry deficiencies in the Old Collegians’ batting. Even J. E. England, who top scored with 16. was on several occasions in danger of being caught in Hopkins's leg trap. G. A. Bartlett showed further heartening progress. He was still not at his full, fearsome pace, but he seems to have mastered his run-up problems. He was no-balled five times in 13 overs during the day. but he was nearly always clearly inside the line. His bowling was more accurate, too, than earlier in the season. The bowlers were assisted by some good catching, as well as by the rather feeble batting. For West Christchurch-Uni-versity. G. T. Dowling played a restrained little innings. B. F. Hastings again looked good, and J. L. Williams also batted well. But it was left to Bartlett to put his side in a strong position His firm driving brought ready runs, he hit two fine sixes, and he was seldom in difficulties. The fast-medium left-hander. N. F Curtis, had most success, at the south end; the ball tended to go through low all day. and Curtis often looked dangerous. When Old Collegians batted again. 107 runs behind, two Wickets were lost quickly, but A. T. Bishop and P. M. Hill gave a cheerful display. Their enterprise must surely have shown the way to the rest of their team. Both of them batted most attractively and capably in a partnership which yielded 82 in only 42 minutes. Both were strong on the drive, and had they survived a little longer, they would have put Old Collegians firmly back in the game. Resourceful and resolute batting next Saturday could still make a good game of it The umpires are Messrs T. Mathie and J. Owens. Scores:—
