Explosions In Space
Sir.—Mr Colin S. U Kcay. writing about the exploding Galaxy M-82. eaid: "The Palomar telescope ‘sees’ the galaxy as it was 10 million years ago but the explosion is undoubtedly still going on." Later on he writes: “The explosion began a mere 300.006 years ago.” as it has only reached 60 thousand million million miles into space If the distance to M-82 is about 10 million light years does it not follow from the above that we are actually seeing an explosion which commenced 10 millicm plus 300.000 years ago in terms of earth tome? As; such a galactic explosion may mark the coming of age of, a galaxy, Mr Keay asks. "Has our galaxy come of age yet?” Probably the answer to this will be irrelevant to earthmen. w-ho in tlte next 100 or so years will likely destroy themselves and other earth life forms in a sudden war of extermination.—Yours, etc., L. F. J. ROSS November 1, 1963.
