RACING Fairlane Favoured For 2-Year-Old Race Today
The majority of races at Motukarara today bear a fairly open appearance. But this does not apply in the Little River Handicap, in which the brilliant Fairlane will run. Fairlane, a two-year-old half-sister to the smart open sprinter, Cranbrook, could be the shortest-priced favourite at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s spring meeting.
Fairlane will be trying for her third win in succession against nine rivals whose racing experience has been restricted to two-year-old parades. Fairlane's two wins came at the Dunedin spring meeting. n»ere she completely outclassed some very smart youngsters over half a mile in the McLean Stakes and Juvenile Handicap. In the Juvenile Handicap Fairlane carried 8-7 and won by three lengths in 48 2-Seec. This time she will hsve another furlong and 9-0 to manage. Fairlane, which is trained at Washdyke by her owner, Mr E. Jackson. will be ridden by the South Canterbury horseman, B. T. Jones, her usual race-rider. The bulk of Fairlane’s rivals are all Rlccarton-trained. They include Colonel’s Lady. Allegretto, We Wood and Pblly’s Pal. which have all shown a fair amount of natural ability. Colonel's Lady won a heat of the two-year-old parade at Ashburton in September, narrowly beating We Wood, which wes also the runner-up in the colts and geldings section of the parade at the Grand National meeting. Allegretto and Polly’s Pal,
which dead-heated for firs* in the two-year-old parade at Rangiora last Monday, are both from the first crop of the former Inglewood Stud sire. My PaL His only stock racing to date are Rio. which gained his second win from four starts in the Karitane Handicap at Trentham last Saturday, and Cascade Lad. the third place-getter in the McLean Stakes at his onlv start.
Today’s double will be run on the J. F. Buchanan Memorial and the Le Bons Handicap. The Derby colt, Valuate. and several New Zealand Cup horses are engaged in the first leg. Now that Boundless has dropped out of the Buchanan Memorial field, the popular fancies are almost certain to be Vitamise. Palisade and. perhaps. Sailorman. Yankin ville. Double and Royal Leigh might round off their racing oreparations for next Saturday's Stewards' Handicap by battling for honours in the Le Bons Handicap.
Gay Filou dropped out of the Le Bons Handicap yesterday.
Although there were some mid-week showers, the track will be firm and fast if the weather remains settled.
