STAMP STORY
«*" by KENNETH ANTHONYi engraved in two colours and ordered from Britain—than to manufacture coinage. This is strangely significant at the present time because as recently as June, 1963. Tonga has issued a series of special stamps in circular designs to mark the introduction of the first gold coinage in Polynesia. The stamp illustrated was also one of the first in the world to be used to celebrate a royal wedding. This was in 1899, on the occasion of the marriage of King George (family name Taufa'ahua) and Princess Lavin La, parents of the present ruler, Queen * Salote. 1 But anyone not in the know would have failed to recognise it at a wedding stamp at all; It simply carried an overprint "T—L” fthe initials of bridegroom and i bride) and the date. It was planned to carry out . this overprinting at the offices Of the Tonga Governmen' Gazette—but the job W'as so badly done that it was de cided to transfer the work i a New Zealand newspgpct the “Star” at Auckland Eves 'here the overprinting waf not free from errors; tre stamps in every sheet 2 80 showed the wrong date--11889 instead ot 1899!
