Important New Book

The Shell Seek ef New Zealand Meter Racing, USS. By Peter Greemlede. Pegues Press. 48 p.p. This is a review ot motor racing in New Zealand during the 1963-63 season, and its publication has been sponsored by Shell Oil New Zealand, Ltd. It gives an excellent, very readable, and accurate account of the season’s activities, and is a valuable addition to the bookshelf of any person interested in motor racing in this country. The most notable feature of the book is the excellent photography, most of which has been done by Euan Sarginson. There are considerably more than 100 photographs, including several in colour. Some of these colour photographs have a slightly blue cast, which may be due to the printing or more likely to the lack of an ultra-violet filter when they were taken. Nevertheless the standard of photography is excellent,

and the printing and layout of the book, on a glossy paper, are to a similar standard. One of the moat amusing blade and white photographs in the book comes, not surprisingly, from the always interesting Warmate meeting. It shows D. Lawrence's Lola sliding on to the pavement in front of the borough councst chambers during the sports car race with, at the edge of the picture, a policemen and a St John Ambulance brigMteemsn getting rapidly out of the way. The literary aide has been bandied well by Peter Greenslade, a motoring correspondent already well known in motor sport circles. A foreword is written by Mr R. W. A. Frost, the president of the Association of New Zealand Car Clubs, All the national and international meetings are covered, prominence being given to the main events. There is a separate section on sports car and saloon events, and sections on the growth of the sport in the past and its probable development

A work of thia nature, which provides a permanent, accurate and weM-Mhutrated record of racing acttviUes in this counter. has been needed for some time, and thia pubHoafiou fills the bill admirably. It b to be hoped the pubMaatfon of this book will be continued in the years to come.
