MODERN SERVICE STATION
TVHAT is expected to be ’’ New Zealand’s finest service station—and the only one of such a modem design in Australia and New Zealand, is nearing completion on the Hutt road a few miles from Wellington. The station has been built on a natural site under the hills flanking the road, where the space on the flat is more than sufficient to provide for all present and future needs. The new station has a frontage to 2000 ft, compared with 70 to 100 ft as the average, so that this amount of space allowed the designers to give full rein to their ideas in developing something different and in accordance with the latest overseas trends.
With easy access from the motorway, motorists can drive on at 55 miles an hour and rejoin the stream of traffic at the same speed. This means that there is no
holding up of traffic by cars J entering and leaving the sta- { tion. The station was designed j with the full collaboration of « the National Roads Board and $ the Ministry of Works, to ' whom the site belongs. The J reading engineers of the * Ministry were keenly inter- 5 ested in the chance to design i something which can be used ! as a blueprint for the future. {
There will be a double; row of pumps, with four J lanes of traffic leading to and 5 from them, thus allowing fast i service all along the line. ; Above the station and pro- { jecting out towards the road- J way, will be a large balcony } which will offer a magnificent » view of Wellington Harbour,
and also upstairs will be a lounge and conference room. It is also planned to have a food section so that customers can buy many of their needs on the spot in addition to petrol, oil and accessories.
