ROADS TO BE KEPT OPEN

£6m British Winter Plan (Special Crspdt. NZPA.) LONDON, Oct. 31. The British Transport Ministry is to put into operation a £6 million (dan to keep trunk roads open in snow and ice this winter and avoid repetition of last winter’s chaotic conditions which resulted in essential supplies being held up and many communities being isolated. Under the scheme a vast army of at least 400 latest snow ploughs and gritting machinery will be kept at danger points throughout the country where they can be moved into action quickly. Counity highway authorities have also been asked to set up radio control centres to handle all emergency arrangements and to organise convoys of heavy lorries headed by snow ploughs to get essential supplies through. Salt Stockpile The Ministry has built up a stockpile of one million tons of salt—more than double the amount available last year. It is hoped that by the winter of 1968 there will be a complete new fleet of snow fighting vehicles controlled by radio from county road engineers headquarters.
