PAVLOVA’S DRESS
Ballet Week In Sydney
Direct links with the prima ballerina, Anna Pavlova, were shown in a special corner at the Week of Ballet exhibition held in Sydney recently. There was a gold, shadowstriped silk dress, cut straight like a shift with four tiered frills on the skirt, worn by the great dancer in the 1800’s. With it was a tiny sketch of Pavlova drawn by the Queensland artist, Enid Dixon, while watching a performance of “Dying Swan” from the wings; and a white feather from Pavlova’s swan costume. In this exclusive display were two letters from Pavlova's husband to Miss Dixon, commending her on the sketches she did of his wife. In the exhibition were many costumes worn by wellknown dancers, paintings, photographs and drawings of stage sets associated with ballet performances in Australia.
