Identities To Be Retained

The Government has decided to amalgamate the departments of Army, Navy and Air into one Ministry of Defence, but the separate iden- ; titles of the three services I will be preserved, the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) ‘ announced today. • The chiefs of staff will remain the professional heads •of their respective services : and continue to fulfil their traditional duty and tender professional advice to the Government, retaining right of access to the Prime Minister.

The Chief of Defence Staff (Rear-Admiral P. Phipps), will continue in the new organisation to hold the senior military appointment and represent New Zealand at international military conferences abroad. The new ministry will be responsible for securing the application of defence policy by the Navy, Army end Air Force Which will continue to be administered by their respective service boards.
