Swimmers Training Until It Hurts

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

LONDON, October 31. The British swimming team for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next October will be the most thoroughly trained and prepared in the history of the sport, says the “York-

shire Post.” Each member of the team will between now and the games have swum between 400 to 600 miles in a gruelling training schedule specially prepared by Mr A. Price, the Olympic team manager, and Mr A. Kinnear, who will be the chief coach at Tokyo. Every member of the training squad will be required to submit an official logbook each month detailing all relevant information, such as quantity of sleep, daily weight, and diet. The training programme

laid down for the swimmers is on a par with the rigorous methods of American and Australian teams.

The first squad is being ordered at least three weeks' rest and will then carry out under their respective coaches the training schedule laid down.

Typical training schedule for both men and women would be one 200-yard swim, one 500-yard swim, followed by four 250-yard swims, with 10 minutes of stop* and starts, and ending with three fast 25-yard swims.

"We are going to push them until it really hurts,” said Mr Price. "There is a pain barrier to break through in swimming before really top times are achieved. "Every member of the team will have gone through the barrier before it leaves for Tokyo.”
