Athletics CARNIVAL AT BRIGHTON
Club Support Needed Unless the majority of dubs supported . the New Brighton sports carnival on December 7, no proceeds would go to the Canterbury Athletic Centre’s all-weather track fund, the centre’s executive committee learned last night. Mr B. Curie said he had been told this by Mr M. Gooney, an official of the New Brighton dub. The chairman (Mir J. E Millar) said the club had not officially asked the centre for help; it was proud of the fact and it was to its credit that it was staging the meeting on its own. But if it was in difficulties the centre should help. It was agreed that at least two representatives from each club should meet New Brighton officials, under the chaunmanship of Mr Millar, after the meeting at Rugby Park tomorrow to discuss ways of supporting the carnival. Schools’ Titles Primary and intermediate schools’ athletics championships will be held in Christchurch this summer, the committee decided.
The meeting will be held on a Saturday, on a date to be ‘ decided. The less athletics had to do with “ money -making, self-advertising firms” the better, said Mr E. Lunn, during a discussion on a remit on sport to be presented at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletics Association in three weeks’ time.
“They put up a story about fostering youth in sport—perhaps they are—but they are doing it flor advertisement,” he said. Notice of his intention to ask the N.Z.A.AA. to help obtain the Empire Games tor Canterbury in the appropriate year was given by the chairman (Mr Milter). He said he would make the approach at the national body’s annual meeting.
