ONE MAYOR NOT GOING
Lord Mayor’s Dinner
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Oct. 31. The Mayor of Fitzroy, a Melbourne suburb, Mrs Florence Peel, has declined an invitation to attend this year’s Lord Mayor’s dinner—traditionally for men only. The dinner is on Saturday week. The Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Leo Curtis, said today he had been prepared to break precedent over Mrs Peel.
But Mrs Peel has kept tradition intact by politely rejecting the invitation. She will be represented by her husband.
Mrs Peel said today: “When I took this job on I knew I would have to use a lot of discretion. I greatly appreciated the invitation but to turn it down seemed simply a matter of common sense.”
