SERVICE TO Y.W.C.A.

Sewing Circle Activities

A life member of the Young Women’s Christian Association in Christchurch, Miss J. Holderness has tor the last 17 years led a small group of women who make a regular annual contribution to the association. Prompted by her great interest in the association she formed a sewing circle, which has become well known for a high

standard of workmanship. Yesterday at the association’s clubrooms, six of tn® eight members of the circle were putting finishing touches to this year’s work, which will be sold next Tuesday. Meeting regularly twice a month, and working hard at home as well, the women have assembled a collection of soft toys, children’s garments, gifts and novelties—such as geisha girls fashioned into kettle-holders, and stocking hold-all hangers. An expert needlewoman, Miss Hplderness specialises in fine embroidery for her annual sales.

When manning a Y.W.C.A. stall at the New Zealand Industries Fair, for which marmalade and gardening aprons were made. Miss Holderness conceived the idea of a sewing group to raise funds and to create interest in the association. It was originally suggested that the sale be held at a garden party, but she preferred to keep attention focused on the Y W.C.A. and stipulated that the sales be held there. For several years the proceeds have been given to the World FeHowship funds, the association’s mutual-service body. Last year £B2 was raised.

Foundation members still working with Miss Holderness are Mesdames M. Davis, C. E. Wilson, and S. E. Tonkin.
