Five Riders Want Mount
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 29. Five jockeys want to ride the New Zealand stayer Straight Irish in the Melbourne Cup. the Melbourne "Herald” racing writer. Jack Elliott, reported today The jockeys are Athol Mulley. Frank Treen, Des Coleman. Peter Wallen and Doug Ferris.
Elliott said the ownertrainer of Straight Irish. Mr John Coffey, had told him he would wait a few days before deciding on a rider. Mr Coffey said he wanted the same rider in the Hotiiam Handicap and Melbourne Cup Elliott said Mr Coffey was interested in getting Mulley for the mount but had emphasised that the jockey must be in Melbourne to handle Straight Irish before the cup. Mulley is booked for several rides in Sydney on Saturday and cannot be at Flemington for the Hotham Handicap. Straight Irish strode two rounds on the sand and then ran 10 furlongs in 2.21 J. four in 51. J today at Flemington.
Bookmakers said today that there has been a steady stream of money for another New Zealand cup entrant. Ilumquh. Elliott said one bookmaker said it was “educated money.” Apparently the stayer was improving, and would be ready for cup day Ilumquh ran a fair race in the Cox Plate, and looks titter every day.
Riccarton Handicaps.—Sirtax, Avast. My Rosary, Gold Shower and Crackle have all been weighted at 7-13 for the Hagley Handicap on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton on November 9. In the list of handicaps yesterday these horses were listed among those on 7-12.
