SUPPORTERS’ CLUB

More Members Needed

The Canterbury Cricket Association's management committee is the strongest body to raise membership of the Supporters’ Club, said the immediate past chairman of the committee, Mr J. T Eltoft, last evening. The membership rose to 400 in the first year, he said, but it has stood still since. “We should have 800 or 1000 members.”

Mr Eltoft, who reported the Supporters’ Club annual general meeting would be at Lancaster Park on November 13, said that the club’s task was not finished. If it was not for the work of the club, there would be no professional coach and it was doubtful if he could be kept—unless there was a large income. Schools Tourney

A South Island schoolboys' tournament is to be held in Christchurch from January 20 to 25, 1964, with a match between the South Island and the Rest on the last day. The secretary of the Junior Advisory Board (Mr R. G Newton) reported that seven associations Invercargill. Eastern Southland, Otago, Ashburton, North Canterbury. Blenheim and Nelson—had expressed their willingness to compete. Mr Newton said there was a record entry of 47 teams—a figure that paled by comparison with Auckland's 187— for the Saturday morning cricket. Amalgamation If no more entries are received, the 3B and fourth grades will be amalgamated after the fifth round, reported the chairman of the competitions committee (Mr G. P. Dryden). AU teams would have met in the two grades and their points would then be carried forward. Mr Dryden also reported that due to an error in the calculating, bonus points in the first senior round should have gone to Lancaster Park and not to Sydenham. School Games At Christmas? The lapse of schoolboys’ cricket for a two-month period at Christmas and the New Year was raised again at a meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening. Mr J T. Eltoft said that the retiring president (Mr W. A. Hadlee) had spoken on it at the annual general meeting at the C.C.A. Mr A. E. L. Britton (the chairmen) said that, at the next meeting of the Canterbury Boys’ Cricket Association. he would report that hie rchcel (Linwood) was willing ■ to play matches on a friendly basis during th«t two-month period. Mr G. P. Dryden said that a j similar system was tried i three years ago and the re-i action was paly luke-warm. '
