CITY BAKERY’S FIFTY YEARS
It was 1913 when the business was founded by two young men named Stacey and Hawker, who that year fired the ovens for the first bread baked in the history of the firm.
Originally founded as a family concern, Stacey and Hawker still retains, fifty years later, its family connexions. with Mr W. R. Hawker, son of one of the founders, as Genera] Manager. A brochure published by the company in 1928 reveals that in 1918 the SX delivery fleet comprised four horsedrawn vans, that in 1922 motor deliveries displaced the horses, that six bread varieties were produced, and in 1928 a new oven was installed which at the time was the most modern available in the world.
But progress comes with other days and other ways and 1963 brings a choice of more than 30 varieties, including a complete range of sliced and wrapped loaves. Stacey and Hawker's is a vigorous example of an oldestablished family firm that has kept up its growth bv keeping up its quality ... a standard of quality well and truly laid by the founders. —P.B.A.
