80 Posts In Two Universities

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 29. The deficiencies of university salary scales are shown by the fact that more than 80 posts are vacant in Auckland and Wellington, says the Association of University Teachers of New Zealand in a memorandum on the revision of salaries submitted to the I'nivercilv Gimnlu Cnminilfpe

In addition, the association says, the University of the Waikato will soon seek foundation members tor its staff. “There are many most disturbing signs that staff ofthe proper standard are not being attracted as applicants for current New Zealand positions,” it says. “A situation involving the possibility of filling important posts at a vital time of expansion with candidates of inferior quality cannot be tolerated in this country,” says the association. Although salaries are not the only consideration in attracting university staff, it believes they are the prime factor, says the association. Because New Zealand must compete with Australia in attracting university staff from Britain, it should offer competitive salaries which, in both Australia and Britain, are up to £lOOO a year higher than in New Zealand. It recommends that pro-

fessors be paid £4OOO a year, that readera and associate professors be paid £3500, that nine yearly rises be given lecturers to enable them to progress from £l6OO to £2500, that senior lecturers go from £2600 to £3OOO in four annual increments, and that assistant lecturers be pa.d from £llOO to £l4OO, their appointments being for from one to four years. A copy of the memorandum was received at a meeting in Wellington today of the council of Victoria University.
