Not only are the Beethoven House in Bonn and various musical instruments that belonged to the great composer at present being restored, but also string instruments that were used during Beethoven’s lifetime. The Cologne insirumentmaker, Buennaged, has been commissioned to restore two violins, a viola and a cello which were given to Beethoven in 1800 by Prince

Lichnowtska. Beethoven tried his string quartets out on these instruments. He had his initials scratched on the back of the instruments and on two of them he placed his seal The violins are a 1600 Nicola Amati and a Giuseppe Guarneri, the viola is a 1680 Vincente Ruggeri and the cello a 1675 Andrea Guarneri.
