PADDLE SHIPS

Society Buys Antique (By a Reuter Correspondent) LONDON. Britain’s Paddle Steamer Preservation Society is fighting a lonely battle to preserve an Edwardian form of marine travel. The 300-member society recently bought the 40-year-old Alumchine which they plan to take on pleasure cruises off the south coast of England. The Alumchine, 70 feet long and with a draft of less than five feet, can carry 200 passengers. It looks what it is—a former car ferry: but for tha society’s member* who will refit it, the Alumchine has all the charm of a pleasure ship. Of hundreds of sea-going paddle steamers a generation ago. fewer than 20 remain in use.
