CRICKET South Africa Wins Game At Perth

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PERTH, October 28. 'Hie South African Touring cricket team won the first match of its Australian tour by beating Western Australia outright today.

South Africa needed 132 runs for the win and lost five wickets in the second innings making them. Western Australia was outplayed in every department and the only bright spots in the second inndngs were the nartnenshiips between Barry Shepherd (47) and Russell Waugh (21), and between the tail-enders. lan Gallash (30 not out) and Hubert Bevan (14).

The final scores were:— South Africa, 297 and 132 for five; Western Australia, 268 and 160.

The South African captain, Trevor Goddard, used an attack based on his fast and fast-medium bowlers and found it more than adequate. The failure of his leading fast bowler, Peter Pollock, to do better than take one wicket for 49 must have been disturbing to Goddard, but he was able to find consolation in the performances of Eddie Barlow and Clive Haise. Barlow took the wickets of Shepherd, Hartley Joynt, and Colin Harburn at a cost of only 19 runs, and Haise dismissed Gordon Becker and Jenner for 31 runs.

Highlights of South Africa’s second innings were the sound displays of Buster Fairer (44), and Anthony Pithey (33).

Graeme Pollock failed for the second tame in the match. He made a weak shot at a rising ball from McKenzie and gave the bowler an easy catch.
