National Dancing And Piping Competitions

Entries, from all pacts of toe country, were more than 600, with a good rejpneeeaiatoon from Chnisxiwch. Janice Hardy, of Gore, with 87 points, won toe nafaonal sailor’s hxxinpipe ctempiansihiip (open, any age) from Elizabeth Smith (Dunethn>, 86, and Jeanette Percy (Tauranca) 85i. Brian North, «f Ashburton, and Elienor Kennedy (Oanaaru) were very highly commended. The winner cf the Dominion seann brktohais, under 16 event, was Jeanette Percy (87). Margaret Bugg, of Oamaru (85) was second, and Rosslyn Smith (Dunedin) with 84 pointe, was third. Lorraine Dewar (Timaru) and Mary Lemon (Dunedin) were very highly commended. South Island district chaunpionships. competetors being from Timaru unless otherwise stated, were won as follows:

South Island Highland Reel (any age): Brian North (Ashburton), 89 points, 1; Janiee Hardy (Gore), 87, 2; Eltenor Kennedy (Oamaru*, 83, 3; Jeanette Percy (Tauranga). 85. v.h.c. Brian North of Ashburton, with 88 points, won the South Canterbury seann trsubhia'is championship (any age). Janice Hardy, of Gore, was second (87), and Jeanette Percy and Elk-nor Kennedy (Oamaru) were very highly commended (83). The Irish Jig (under 12> South Canterbury championship was won by Sharon Smith, of Oamaru (79 points), from Pamela Zwies (Oamarui. 74, and Judith SheWook, cf Christchurch, with 73 points. Joan McCusker, Heather Quarter-man (Palmerston), and Pauline Sandiri were very highly commended. B. Richardson, of Christchurch (72 points) was the winner of the South Canterbury pipe marches (D grade) championship. A. Stewart (70) was second, and T. Calder (68) was third.

In the slow airs (C grade) district championship, B Richardson (77J points) was first, D. McAlpine (77) was second, and M. Paterson (764* was third.
