LABOUR DAY PICNIC

Labour Party’s Fixture Fathers wheeled prams at toe Labour Day picnic held at Linwood Park yesterday by the Labour Party while mothers prepared their infants for the baby show. Pullovers and jerseys were toe order of toe day, because of an unpleasant, penetrating north-east wind. The president of the Christ - church Labour Representation Committee (Mr R. Jones) said the total attendance was 5000.

The children found plenty to occupy themselves with. There were races, a fancydress parade, side-shows, a toy railway and merry-go-rounds, and 1000 bags of lollies were distributed. At the baby show, on a grassy bank, matrons sat row upon row in an improvised ring, jiggling their infants on their knees. At toe St. John Aiributance Brigade’s tent, half a dozen youngsters were treated for cuts and scratches, and one woman received first-aid treatment when she felt faint. Families spread out over the grass bank of the park to enjoy picnic lunches, and dogs ran everywhere, eating scraps from lunches. At 4 p.m. tired babies, tired mothers, tired fathers, and tired children were ready to go home. Only the dogs wanted to stay on.
