Southbridge Athletic Club’s Annual Meeting

Conditions for the greater part of the day were perfect for the Southbridge Athletic Sports Club's annual sports yesterday. The sun was quite warm although there was a

north-easterly wind blowing. Late in the afternoon the wind became much stronger and the temperature dropped considerably and many spectators started to leave. Three championships were decided, G Moore taking the three mile North Canterbury cycling title. The 220 yards South Island athletic championship went to M. Courtney and the Gillie Callum, under 16 provincial championship, was won by Rosemary Armstrong. The championship awards were presented to the winners by Mr J. K. McAlpine, M.P., and Mrs McAlpine. Mr McAlpine was seen in a new role when he took the starter’s gun and sent away the field in a cycling event. P. G. Hach thrilled the crowd with his brilliant running in the 880 yards and the mile events. In each event with a little less than a lap to go he raced away from his opponents and won easing up in the straight. P. Arnst, who has done little track racing, made full use of his handicap and won the Little Rakaia and Sedgemere Cycling Handicap events fairly easily.

The three mile North Canterbury cycling championship was full of interest. Apart from the first and last of the 12 laps there were lap prizes. J. Blackmun and G. Moore broke away from the field at the end of the first lap. After another two laps these two were joined by F. Hooper, and were holding nearly 200 yards lead over the rest of the field. Hooper failed in the lap sprints and did not take one, but Moore gained seven and Blackmun three. With two laps to go it appeared that these three were going to dispute the major placings. Blackmun fell back and this left Moore and Hooper in the lead. With a little less than a lap to go K. Brown set off after the leaders and gradually gained on them.

In the concluding stages Brown was hampered with a flat tyre but managed to get up for third place. Even if he had not had a puncture it is doubtful if he would have caught the leaders. Results were:— CYCLING Half-mile Lakeside Handicap. —First heat: W. Woodgate 165yds) 1. W. Campion (140vds) 2. I. Arnst (110yds) 3, K. Brown (lOvds behind) 4, G. Moore (13yds) 5. Time. 1:5.
