Devlin, playing golf that according to P. W. Thomson, * could not be bettered anywhere in the world,” shattered the old tournament record of 277 held jointly by R. J. Charles and K. D. G. Nagle, with his four rounds of 68, 68, 69, 69.

69.64 Leads By One Stroke (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) PORTLAND. Sept. 22. After two rounds of the Portland Open golf tournament. an Americsin, Mason Rudolph, leads with 89. 64 133. followed by George Knudson. Tommy Jacobs and Dave Hill, all on 136, Associated Press reported.
Devlin led home by three strokes a field in which Australians filled 10 of the first 12 places. D. Welch was second on 277 and Nagle (278) was third. Charles, m spite of his virtually hopeless position at the end of the third round, eight strokes behind Devlin, still drew a large crowd and rewarded them with a fine 68. First amateur was the New Zealand international, R. R. Newdick. His rounds of 71, 70, 69, 74, left him two strokes dear of either J. D. Durry or P. K. Creighton. Leech Crashed The Friday night leader of the amateur field with two 69's, T. S. Leech, of Taupo, crashed on Saturday with 75 and 79 and ended on 292—one stroke behind another amateur, E. J. McDougall. Devlin’s card for the final 18 was: Out—4, 3,3, 5,3, 4 5,4, 4; In—3, 4,4, 3,3, 3,3, 4, 7
There were four birdies and an eagle on the thirteenth where a magnificent iron shot stopped nine feet from the pin. A hooked iron into a tree on the eighteenth saw Devlin
on afll fours chipping back to the fairway. A short chip to the green and a massed putt gave him a two-over seven.
He and Thomson ware neck and neck and reached the tenth on the last round with only two strokes between them. But here Devlin played A 310-yard drive, scored a birdie three, and from then on Thomson was struggling. Nagle in Trouble
Nagle was five under playing the seventeenth, but his tee shot went into the rough and from there he went to a bunker by the green. The acknowledged master of the short game looked anything but that when he blasted out into another bunker on the other side. Three putts on the green completed a disastrous hole and removed the final bit of pressure on Devlin, following three holes behind. The West Australian, L. Thomas, had the best third round erf 68, and the man who makes a habit of shooting tow scores, W. Dunk, had a 67 in the afternoon.
One of the leaders at the end of the second round, R. Tuohy, of Sydney, maintained his position near the top after the third round but then took 40 for the first nine holes in the afternoon.
