Lancashire Lass Takes N.Z. Golf Title
(New Zealand Press Association)
/ AUCKLAND. September 11. A 22-year-old Lan* cashire girl, Miss Julia Greenhalgh, won the New Zealand women’s golf title at Titirangi today. Progressing from Indifferent to good to brilliant in a taut and prolonged final with her countrywoman. Mrs Marley Spearman, she holed putts from eight to 10ft for birdie threes on the thirty-third and thirty-fourth holes to win by four and two. Miss Greenhalgh deservedly won because she hit the ball, shot for shot, more accurately and with finer control. Lost Big Lead She had her bad moments, too. After only 10 holes she was three up, but by the end of another six holes the match was square, and it remained that way until the twenty - fifth. Then Miss Greenhalgh, with a superb iron to within 6ft of the hole, looked as if she might be starting a march to victory. But she began to commit more errors and with seven holes to play the match was still square. It was now that a contest of endurance turned into a race. At the long twelfth hole, Mrs Spearman sliced a wood from the fairway so close to the fringing manuka that she could play no more than a recovery shot. Miss Greenhalgh now took Charge. She won this hole, halved the next, won the fourteenth when Mrs Spearman three-putted, and at both the thirty-third and thirty-fourth holes played sensational seconds and judged the borrow of the green with most delicate skill.
