VOTING IN ALGERIA
‘lrreversible Socialism 9 (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PARIS, September 9. Algeria today became a one-party republic with the adoption of a new constitution by popular referendum. A big majority endorsed the constitution, thus giving a vote of confidence to the Premier, Mr Ben Bella, who raised the flag of revolt against France on November 1, 1954. Figures published by the Central Commission of the referendum showed that 5,010,714 of the 5,102.020 valid votes were in favour. Mr B«n Bella, who is certain to be elected Algeria's first President next Sunday, has promised to decree what he calls “irreversible Socialist measures." This was taken by remaining French settlers as a warning that most European land holdings would be nationalised.
