Chathams Cargo Subsidy Increase?

[From Our Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, September 11. The recent increase in coastal freight rates would apply to the Chatham Islands trade, but the Government was likely to approve an increase in the supplementary subsidy to offset its effects, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Leon Gotz) said in Parliament today.

Mr N. E. Kirk (Opp., Lyttelton) had asked that the Government should consider steps to ensure that the rates for livestock from the Chathaims should not increase further. Sir Leon Gotz recalled that when freight rates were increased by 5s a ton at the announcement of the last shipping season, the Government paid a special subsidy of Is a head on sheep shipped that season to maintain the freight rate on sheesp at its previous level.

"I also indicated in a reply to a previous' question by Mr Kirk that if a case was established for the extension of a special subsidy for another year, the Government would give this every consideration,” he said. “After the recent increase in freight rates, representations have been made to the Government seeking an extension of the special subsidy on sheep shipped from toe Chathams so as to preserve the freight rate at last year’s figure. Those representations are at present being considered.”

Mr Kirk: Are we to take it then that, in addition to

the Is which was paid last year to offset the 5s increase, a further increase in toe supplementary subsidy will be made sufficient to offset the second increase in coastal freight rates since the rates were freed from price control by the Government last year? Sir Leon Gotz: In considering the question last year, the Government exercised the utmost fairness, and I have no doubt that the same spirit will be observed by the Government in considering this year’s representations. Mr. Kirk: Can the Minister advise when a decision can be expected? Sir Leon Gotz: I should not thank a decision would be long delayed. I have not yet had the papers’ dealing with it.
