THIS BIG 60FT ANTENNA, at Camp Roberts, California, served as one terminal in the long-distance satellite communications test last month. Voice and teletype messages were exchanged between the west coast of Africa and California by Syncom II, the new United States communications satellite. The test covered a surface distance of 7700 miles, the longest “line-of-sight” communication ever made between two points on earth by a satellite in orbit. A similar dish antenna on board the communications ship Kingsport, in Lagos harbour, Nigeria, served as the Africa terminal for the exchange.
