MODEL CAR RACING ON SATURDAY

TZ'EEN competition is expeeled in all events when the Canterbury model car championships are held in the Railway Hail, Carlyle street, on Saturday. A record number of entries is expected, for though the sport is perhaps not widely known it is followed by a very keen band of drivers whose numbers are increasing.

The championship® are held in three classes—Grand Prix, sports cars, and a junior event. Entry in toe j junior event is limited to those under 16 years of age, and the event is held during the morning. Heats of Grand Prix and sports cars events are held during the aflternoon and run-offe and finals in the evening. These championships usually attract large entries from various parts of the country; in fact a proxy entry received from Auckland for the South Island championships held last May won the Grand Prix event. The main event to be staged ait the Canterbury championships will be the Grand Prix for the Scott Challenge Cup, which was won in October last year by E. Inwood The sports car championship, for the Model Specialists Challenge Trophy, ws® won by M. Hamblin, and the junior sectiop, flor the Victoria Motors Trophy, was won by David Richards. The cars competing in this racing are exact scale models of famous racing cars such as Lotus, BB.M. and Ferrari, and are capable of scale speeds of 140 to 150 miles an hour. Usually the cars are factorybuilt models with modifications by the owner, but several home-built cars are raced. The most popular car is the Lotus, although the Ferrari is gaining in popularity. The sport is one requiring a great deal of skill when it comes to competitive racing, and some thrilling racing is expected for the various championships.
