RETURNED FROM U.S. TO FACE CHARGE
(New Zealand, Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Sept. 9. A chief petty officer of the United States Navy, Roger Charles King, told Mr N. M. Izard, S.M., in the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court today he had returned to New Zealand from America in July so he could attend the Court sitting. King, who pleaded guilty to a charge of driving in a dangerous manner, was fined £lO, and his driving licence was cancelled for a year.
“I appreciate your coming back,” said the Magistrate when imposing sentence. “Had you not, nothing much could have been done.”
‘‘Rad I not come back this would have hung over my head for the rest of m y life,” said King. The Magistrate saiid he believed King's offence occurred through an error of judgment. In view of the delay that had taken place since the offence he would not impose as heavy a fine as he ought to. Traffic Officer J. Mclvor said that on February 3, he saw a heavy truck driven by King overtake a line of five cars at Hampden. Just as King did this a car approached over a rise from the opposite direction. Cars in the ’ine and the approaching ear were forced to the roadside.
King told the Court today he was about to go to Antarctica.
