Miss Burns Awarded Canadian Scholarship
Miss Carolyn Burns, who has been awarded a Canadian Commonwealth scholarship, left by air for Toronto, Canada, on Saturday. She will continue her studies for the next three years in the zoology department of the University of Toronto, where she will specialise in limnology (freshwater biology). Miss Burns, aged 21, is the younger daughter of Dr. M. M. Burns, principal of Lincoln College, and Mrs Burns. She attended Christchurch Girls’ High School, graduating dux in 1958 and winning a University National entrance scholarship. At the University
of Canterbury, she graduated with a B.Sc. degree gaining first-class honours in zoology. She was awarded a university senior scholarship and the Percival Memorial Prize in zoology. During summer vacations, Miss Burns has worked on research projects for the Crop
Research Division of the D.S.I.R. and for the Christchurch Drainage Board. She spent the 1961-62 summer vacation in Australia, where she worked for the entomology division of the C.5.1.R.0. in Canberra.
Her other interests include sketching and painting, reading, tramping and fencing. She was a member of the University of Canterbury fencing team for three years.
