Fair Bid Picked At Gisborne Today

"The Press" Special Service GISBORNE, September 10. Both Bright Summer and Fair Bid have done well since Saturday. They look likely to stage another keen battle in the President’s handicap, first leg of T.A.B. double at the Poverty Bay spring meeting at Makaraka tomorrow.

Fair Bid relished the easy going in his work this morning. He may beat Bright Summer and thus pave the wiay for the Te Awamuitu trainer, J. Wickliff, to take the double. Marcella’s winning efltort on the first day looked outstanding. Advocacy came fast wide out for fifth on Saturday. On the heavier track he may keep closer to the leaders tomorrow. He has raced well on the track in the past and could be in the money. It is likely Bright Summer will be more heavily backed. His form tomorrow will determine whether the versatile veteran will start in the Wattle Gold Cup next week. Different tactics may be adopted with Friendly Trio tomorrow. He lost his chance when he became awkwardly placed at the turn last week, though he came again gamely in the straight for third. Royal Ransom’s effort on the first day was hard to explain. He has been schooled since and has worked more keenly. A repetition of Hastings form would make him a decided prospect. None of the handicappers stripped fitter for final work than Fair Bid. He will meet Bright Summer 51b better, and track conditions should suit him.

Simoa’s prospects have also been improved by the easing of the track, but he may not improve as much as the Awapuni mare, Princess Merit.

Marcella is confidently expected to complete the double in the Makaraka Hack Handicap, the second leg. This Te Awamuitu mare did not have a great deal to spare from Monoceros last week, but her performance looked outstanding. She had forced most of the pace and after appearing to be covered at the half-furlong she was coming away again in the last few strides. Monoceros again looks likely to hold Wonder, but both may be hard put to concede weight to a newcomer, Wee Amyn, which has been showing useful form as a hurdler. Wee Amyn has run some of his best races at Makaraka. Carlynn, Jillian, and Full Strength have also done well since, the week-end. They could be light-weight prospects. Break Away will not start in the Poverty Bay Steeplechaise. The further meeting of Collector and Southern Cloud in this event is awaited with interest.

Heavy showers since the week-end left surface water on the track art Makaraka. Ths weather was fine today, with a drying wind, and track conditions should not be worse than soft.
