SUBSIDY ON EGGS
Grant Increase To £4.6m
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 10. The price of eggs was reasonable, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) in Parliament today. Speaking in the Economic Stabilisation Estimates debate, he said the subsidy on eggs had increased from £4,542,681 to £4,610.000. The increase was the result of more eggs being consumed. The subsidy was fourpence a dozen.
Mr W. E. Rowling (Opp., Buller) asked if the subsidy on rail transport of industrial coal could be extended to gas and domestic coal. There should also be consideration of extending the subsidy to sea haulage. Mr R. L. Bailey (Opp., Heretaunga) asked for the subsidy on wheat to be increased.
Mr W. A. Fox (Opp.. Miramar) asked if any subsidy was paid to the shipping industry ' The Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) replied that there was a subsidy on shipping to the Chatham Islands and on the service between Bluff and Stewart Island.
