TROTTING Tactile To Compete In Sprints At Cup Meeting

The Wyndham trainer, D. P. Dynes, will be well represented at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Addington in November. The “star” of the team Dynes intends to bring north will be the champion Tactile. Tactile, which is already in New Zealand Cup class, will probably be nominated for the rich two-mile event. But his campaign at Addington is more likely to be confined to sprint races on the later days of the meeting.

Tactile, which is in regular work, has put on a lot of condition since his return from a successful campaign in Australia. The reappearance of this highly rated four-year-old—he is on a sprint mark of 2mm 9sec—will be a major attraction. The only two pacers more tightly assessed are Cardigan Bay and Gentry.

Deft and Light Mood will be other pacers trained by Dynes which will try to earn a New Zealand Cup start before November. Deft, a half-sister to Tactile. made an encouraging start to her flve-year-old racing at the national meeting last month. She shared winning honours with Avante in the August Handicap on the first day and wrnn the Improvers’ Handicap on the second day. She was not penalised for her initial success. but earned a 2mm 13sec

mile rating—the Cup limit is 2min lOsec—for her Improvers’ Handicap victory. Deft still requires two distance wins to get back to the 2min llsec mark, which would probably allow her to start in the Cup. She could achieve that in the next week or two. Immediate Plans Deft’s immediate programme includes a start in the A. E. Laing Handicap at New Brighton next Saturday week. She will probably run in the Meth ven Cup the following week. Light Mood is even closer !to cup class. He already has ' a 2min 12sec mile rating. ; Light Mood, a very capI able pacer, has had a re- . stricted career because of unsoundness. Last season he won once and gained two places from seven starts for his Invercargill ownertrainer. C. H. G. Irvine. At his most recent attempt, Light Mood was runner-up to Lordship in a heat of the Dunedin Festival Cup at Forbury Park last January. Light Mood has done particularly well since he joined Dynes’s team. If he remains sound he could have a very good season. Tactus, a three-year-old brother to Tactile and Deft, will begin his second season at Addington. His campaign will start with the Riccarton Stakes on the first day of the cup meeting as a lead up to the New Zealand Derby.

Tactus did not win a race as a two-year-old but was placed in three of his five starts. Jolly Hal An interesting newcomer in Dynes’s stable is the former Canterbury-trained Hal Tryax gelding Jolly Hal. Jolly Hal showed good form as a three-year-old when trained at Belfast by C. S. Donald. His record of three wins included the Wellington and Rangiora Challenge Stakes. In the latter event he beat his stablemate, King Hal, which has since graduated to New Zealand Cup class. The best that Jolly Hal managed the following season was three minor platings from 11 starts, and last season he was put aside to spell after one race at Forbury Park last October. Beside the large team of horses which have already raced. Dynes is preparing a handy num’ er of well-bred horses for racing careers. They include a three-year-old half-sister to Gildirect. This filly is a daughter of Light Brigade. He has a two-year-old colt by Hal Tryax and a three-year-old filly by Light Brigade. Both of these youngsters are out of Twinkle Hall, a well-performed daughter of U. Scott and Keivin Lass. He is also preparing two fillies which are out of Aegean. One is a three-year-old daughter of Light Brigade and the other is a two-year-old by Hal Tryax.
