WAR PENSION INCREASE
Increased rate for war pensions and war veterans’ allowances announced in the Budget in July are payable from September 4. Arrears of the increase, which date back from July 17, will also be paid with the current instalment. A total of 71.000 benefits—--36,000 war disablement pensions and war widows’ pensions, and nearly 35,000 economic pensions and allowances—are affected by the increases.
Included in the new rates is a 5s rise in the rate of the maximum basic disablement pension from £5 to £5 5s a week. There are pro rata increases for lesser degrees of disablement.
Two Injured. When two cars collided at the corner of Worcester street and Fitzgerald avenue at 9.55 p.m. on Friday, two passengers in one car were injured. Michael Mora, of Selwyn avenue. Akaroa, was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital with head injuries. Michael Cook, of Smith street, Akaroe, also suffered head injuries .and was treated at the Christchurch Hospital,
