TENNIS American In U.S. Final First For Eight Years

FOREST HILLS (New York). Sept. 8. For the first time in eight years the Forest Hills crowd have an American to cheer for in the final of their men s national tennis championship today. He is 6ft 4in F. Froehlinf. the second ranked United States player, but unseeded in the tournament. Froehling will play the fourth seed. R. Osuna, of Mexico, who yesterday beat the top seed. C. McKinley (U.S.) 6-4. 6-4. 10-8 Australian hopes of retaining the title, held for seven years, died in the fourth round. The only Australian m anj of the singles finals is the defending women’s champion. Miss M. Smith. Miss Smith will meet the former United States and Wimbledon champion. Miss M. Bueno, of Brazil, today. Miss Smith easily won her semi-final yesterday against Miss D. Catt. of England. 6-2. 6-0. The little English girls’ game is based on strong drives from the baseline, but she was outdriven by Miss Smith as well as being clearly outplayed in other departments. Miss Catt had her chance to break Miss Smith in the third game when she reached deuce twice, but she hit out two returns of service. England's second semi-finalist. Mrs A. Haydon Jones, gave Miss Bueno a great fight before the Brazilian won. 1-6. 6-2. 9-7. Miss Bueno had a poor first
set and dropped her service in the second and sixth games. McKinley earlier came within one point of defeat in his quar-ter-final match against Tomas Koch aged lg. of Bruit, However. McKinley won 4-4 4-6 4-4 8-6. 6-4 An upset was the defeat of the second seeded Miss D Hard of the United States, bv Mrs A. Haydon Jones, of England, Mis* Hard was beaten. 4-4 6-3, in Ute quarter-finals Under 16 Finals Played I. Behrnes, of Ashburton, won the under 16 singles when the Canterbury junior hard-cow t tournament was completed at Wilding Park on Saturday. Behrnes. who was seeded first, beat the third-seeded, L. Thom. 6-1. 6-2. in the final D. Meredith and D. Tullet won the under 16 boys* doubles In a semi-final they beat the topseeded pair, Benrnes and G. Wheal. 6-3. 6-3. and then P McGoldrick and D. Archer. 4-1. 6-1. in the final.
