ACID FOUND IN MILK
Man Arrested In Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. September 8. A man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after the discovery that 6000 gallons of milk, worth nearly £lOOO, had been contaminated by a quantity of sulphuric acid early on Saturday morning or Friday night. The acid was discovered when the milk started to go through a pasteuriser at the Rockfield road treatment station. The milk reacted to the heat of the pasteurising machine. by curdling. It clogged the filter cloths. All of the milk was tipped down the drain. The manager of the treatment station, Mr H. I. Stonex, said there would not be any shortage of milk as a result of the loss of this amount. Milk from the East Tamaki Dairy Company's factory was diverted to Auckland. The milk, collected on Friday evening, was stored overnight in vats before pasteurising. Mr Stonex said he doubted very much whether enough sulphuric acid had been put in the milk to make it harmful to anyone drinking it. Sulphuric acid was used in the station’s laboratory.
