A RICH ENDOWMENT.—New Zealand’s rich endowment of ferns of many kinds is faithfully recorded in “New Zealand Ferns,” which has been the standard work in the field since it first appeared in 1916 under the editorship of the late H. B. Dobbie. A sixth edition, in which Marguerite Crookes incorporates with Dobbie’s work newer knowledge and recent research, has just been published by Whitcombe and Tombs. A book for the layman, as well as for the specialist, the new edition i s lavishly illustrated with descriptive plates. The above picture from the book shows an old logging track colonised by tree-ferns, and illustrates the part ferns play in forest regeneration.
