MOVE FOR UNITY
Watersiders’ Unions (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. To achieve unification of the four unions at present controlling waterfront labour, the Federation of Labour is sending the unions a circular letter calling for a conference, the secretary of the federation (Mr K. M. Baxter) said today. He said requests for the federation to unify the waterfront union situation had been received from some of foe unions.
“The policy of foe federation is to try to get unity in the union administration of all individual industries in New Zealand,” said Mr Baxter. Mr Baxter said it was obvious to 95 per cent of the labour force of the waterside workers that the existence of four unions was detrimental to the interests and the welfare of waterside workers in the industry and acted as a deterrent towards the unity of the working class.
