DEMAND BY T.U.C.
Nationalisation Of Industry (N.Z.P A. -Reuter— Copyright) BRIGHTON, Sept. 8. The annual assembly of the Trades Union Congress at Brighton yesterday unanimously demanded a sweeping extension of national isa- . tion to British industries still in private hands. This decision took the TU C a leap ahead of the British Labour Painty. With the prospect of fighting a general election within the next 12 months the Labour Party has been extremely cautious in avoiding new advance commiiitments on State-ownership. The Labour Party—the majority of whose members are affiliates from the T.U.C. —is pledged firmly only to renationalise steel and road haulage.
The post-war Labour Government passed legislation nationalising steel but it was swept out of office before the process was completed. It nateonal ised road hdulage, but this u»as returned to private hands by the Conservative Government. The nationwlissitaon motion expressed “alarm” ait “the concentration of economic and political power in the hands of a* few powerful groups arising from an increase in mergers." Sponsored by associated group of locomotive engineers and firemen it asked the T.U.C. to campaign agninrt this policy.
