There was some excellent golf played on the opening day of the men's section of the New Zealand Maori golf championships at Rotorua todav The best round was a 68 carded by the Waikato Freyberg rose bowl player. T. Ormsby. He had a 77 on the par-70 course in the morning round, however, which put him in third place. The leader was the Springfield club champion, J. Uluave, who had rounds of 69 and 73. This gave him a 36-hole total of 142, two ahead of his consistent club-mate. C. Hurlhanganul (72-73), and three ahead of Ormsby,
