BASKETBALL Southland Causes Two Big Upsets

ROTORUA, August 27. Auckland, Canterbury and Southland were the only unbeaten. teams from 10 entrants in the first grade after the first day’s play in the hational baskehtball championships at Rotorua today. Southland caused the biggest surprise by its defeat of Rotorua, which was joint champion with Canterbury. It completed a notable double by beating Wellington, which had been regarded as strong opposition to the defending champions. Auckland scored two good wins, against Manawatu, 35-30, and Otago, 37-30. Canterbury convincingly beat Manawatu, 48-17. and showed vast improvement on its morning’s unimpressive display when it seratchily beat Matamata, 43-35.
