Palmer Chases Leader

Johnny Pott withstood one of Arnold Palmer’s late finishes to keep the lead at the end of the third round of the American Golf Classic, United Press International reported. Pott had a third round of 71 for a total of 206 to hold a one-stroke lead over Palmer, who had six birdies in his 66. Another stroke away was Bobby Nichols, who had a 70. The United States open champion. Julius Boros, had 70 for 210. Harold Kneece, 68—211, Lionel Hebert, 69—211; Jack Nicklaus, 71—211, and Bruce Crampton 72—211. The British open champion. R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, who had a 68 on Saturday, was on 212.
