LABOURERS’ MERGER
“Now Over To Canterbury” J (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Aug. 21. Members of the Otago Labourers’ Union have voted by 314 to 6 to amalgamate with the Canterbury branch of the Labourers’ Union. Results of a postal ballot were given today by Mr D P. Thomas, returning officer for the Department of Labour at Dunedin. The Otago and Canterbury executives would meet ‘‘within the next few weeks” to discuss the proposal, Mr A. J. McNeill, the Otago chairman said tonight. “We feel that amalgamation will be in the best interest of both Otago and Canterbury labourers," he said. With the mechanisation of works, the numerical strength of the labourers’ unions was being reduced, he said. Amalgamation of the branches, which had been discussed for some time, would give them solidarity. “Now it is over to Canterbury.”
