Charity Left Home Anglican congress delegates do not tip as heavily as Royal York Hotel staff members would like, according to Canadian Press. A bell captain said: “It's been so lean around here that every morning I consider taking up a collection.” —Toronto, August 20. Fair Hours The hours of opening of the New Zealand Industries Fair at Canterbury Court will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. as from tomorrow until the fair ends on Saturday night, August 31. The fair has so far been opened at 1 p.m. except for last Saturday, when the opening was at 10 a.m. The secretary-manager (Mr R. T. Alston) said yesterday that every morning so far about 100 country persons had arrived at 10 a.m., the opening time in previous years. They had been admitted for nothing and shown round. With the start of the school holidays on Saturday, Mr Alston considers, that 10 a.m. opening will be necessary. Birthdays Only one incident disturbed the even tenor of the Canterbury Education Board’s annual meeting yesterday morning. After standing committees and board’s representatives had been re-elect-ed the chairman of the board, Mr A. S. Murray, announced that it was the birthday of the secretary-manager, Mr W. P. Spencer. “It’s Princess Margaret’s, too," Mr Spencer said proudly through the chorus of congratulations. Appreciated Publicity given by the newspapers on the behaviour of the crowd at Lancaster Park during the North v. South Island match on August 10 had been greatly appreciated, said Mr C. F. Collins at a meeting of the Victory Park Board last evening. The board decided to thank the newspapers. It also commended its chairman (Mr J. O. Hattersley), who is also chairman of the Ccnterbury Rugby Union, on his statement. T.A.B. Award Salary increases ranging from £l2 to £4O 10s a year for men and £l2 to £39 IQs for women have been granted to clerical and office staff employed by the New Zealand Totalisator Agency Board. Driver Course Another driver improvement course will be conducted by the Christchurch City Council traffic department in the M.E.D. lecture room on Wednesday, September 18, at 8 p.m. Motorists and friends wishing to attend were invited to leave their names at the traffic counter in the City Council Chambers, or to ring the department, 77-840, and leave their names, the Christchurch City Council traffic superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) said yesterday. Last Excursion The last railway excursion to Arthur’s Pass for this year will be run on Sunday. The excursion held about two weeks ago was to have been the last, but an extra one was arranged because of the heavy demand. Bookings on Sunday’s excusion train are reasonable, but the railways advise there are still seats left and patrons should book early to avoid disappointment.
