Big Pay For Salvage

(NJI. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 21. Forty-four Auckland watersiders grossed nearly £ 4000 in wages for a week’s work salvaging cargo from the No. 6 hold in the 11,000-ton Suffolk. The men had today averaged £9O, but tax deductions chopped this amount by more than a third. Salvaging cargo of sodium carbonate began nine days ago. The men are using picks and crowbars to part the of cargo, which are stuck together. The air is foul from the smelly water and ammonia fumes. Unloading is expected to be finished on Saturday.
