DAMAGE TO TREES
Tops Snapped By Snow V Serious damage to a large number of trees in the Ashley State Forest was caused by a heavy fall of snow last week. The tops of many trees in areas above 700 ft were snapped off, said Mr H. H. Wilson, a forester with the New Zealand Forest Service, yesterday. “In places,’’ he said, "it’s like a battlefield of dead stumps.” Many trees 60ft high had been snapped off about 30ft and these would eventually die as there were no branches left,” said Mr Wilson. The forest service has never experienced this type cf damage before. During the heavy snowfall of 1945, many trees had been completely uprooted by the weight of snow, but few had actually snapped.
Mr Wilson considers the damage was accentuated by the strong south-westerly wind which blew after the snow-storm on August 5.
