DELAYS AT WHARVES
Tiny Packages Consigned (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 21. Thousands of tiny packages which had to be "handled and re-handled on the Wellington waterfront were the main reason for the slow turn-round of shipping and shed congestion, the general manager of the Wellington Harbour Board (Mr H. Meachen) said today. A consignment of 1451 packets of oatmeal, each less than a square foot was being handled this morning. Mr Meachen said such packets should have been in containers. This morning about 70 men were engaged in handling 1200 tons of cargo from the coaster Squall. The oatmeal, in various coloured packets, was coming off the ship mixed in the slings. Watersiders had to sort them by colour into 18 stacks. There were 22 consignees for the oatmeal, and all required a selection from each stack. More than 95 per cent, of the cows in Britain are now machine-milked, compared with six per cent, less than 30 years ago. Milking installations in Britain have increased from 8500 in 1936 to 120,000 in 1956.
