NEW FREIGHT SERVICE
Railway Waggons On Charter Another indication of the way in which the “Aramoana” has changed the pattern of inter-island and coastal trade is the formation of a company giving a daily freight service by rail between the North and South Islands and between the main railway terminals in both islands. The company, “Daily Freight Service,” which is owned and operated by the New Zealand Express Company, Ltd., and A. R. Guthrey and Company, Ltd., with W A. Habgood, Ltd., associated, has arranged its own siding on Moorhouse avenue and its own loading and unloading staff.
By chartering railway waggons and arranging daily bookings of waggons on the “Aramoana,” the new company is able to offer reduced rail and total freight charges. Although the new service is lowering rail charges, it has the Railway’s Department's co-operation as it is engendering new business and leaving the department to its primary purpose of carrying goods from point A to point B, without the added responsibility and cost of handling, sorting and storage. By guaranteeing a daily service, the new company has assured a steady stream of business. —P.B.A.
